When I got into Oxford, I envisaged debating with like-minded people, joining the Oxford Union, dining in the grand halls and learning to row. The reality was one big social, financial and intellectual struggle. I was intimidated by the cultural divide. I was used to walking barefoot around a Cornish fishing village and all of a sudden I was having to wear a gown, ribbon and heels my first ever pair — thank God for Matalan to exams. We had very little in common. I also struggled academically. Having always kept up with the pace at school, going to Oxford very quickly highlighted my intellectual limits. I also had no idea how to construct a decent essay.

It is an intriguing headline on the website of Cherwell, Oxford’s year-old student newspaper — A guide to dating posh girls: Article removed. Helpfully, Cherwell’s younger rival The Oxford Student, no doubt in the public interest, runs the article in full. The removed article was meant to be a light hearted six-point guide for working class boys who might be missing their whippets and want to date a “posh” woman. It did not go down well, with cries of “misogyny” and “stereotyping”.
A note from Cherwell’s editors says: “We have decided to remove the article that previously occupied this page. However, this is not a response to the accusations of plagiarism or misogyny.
Of course, your faculty and college libraries will be your first port-of-call: the former has all the books for your course, and the latter is the only one you can go to in your pyjamas. But here are three others worth adding to your repertoire Out of all the libraries, the Rad Cam has a long-standing reputation for its concentration of good-looking people. The double-sided desks make it practically impossible not to make eye contact with your neighbour and, hey, if you end up taking a coffee break together, what’s the harm?

This is according to a new study from the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford in collaboration with eharmony , which tracked changing preferences and communication patterns among single Brits over the past decade. This suggests that people feel they also have a maximum communication limit when looking for a meaningful relationship.
In the study, singles were actually fairly restrictive in the number of people that they communicated with at any one time. This may indicate that they are more invested in their search for a truly compatible partner. Whilst strategies might vary across more casual dating platforms, users on eharmony are particularly invested in finding a long term romantic partner, so we are confident that these findings are applicable to non-casual courtship behaviour in general. In line with this, researchers also found that more attractive users tend to be the most complacent, initiating less conversation as they increasingly gain confidence in their ability to attract interest.
Furthermore, female subscribers who prove popular on the dating platform are significantly more selective about how many messages they respond to. This research was conducted using advanced statistical methods on data of over 1 million matches between eharmony users. Filters were applied to the data to ensure that only active users were studied.

In one of the largest studies into online dating, researchers at Oxford University and eHarmony analysed , profiles over 10 years to look at common patterns. And the few times that women have initiated the conversation, their response rates have dropped. Other traditional values also remained popular, such as looking down on being sex-positive. On the bright side though, Brits were more receptive to dating outside their social strata and placed less emphasis on income or religion.

Despite appearances, Tom Beardsworth isn’t actually in Mumford and Sons. Tom Beardsworth I’m going to keep calling him that, because it’s a funny name is a writer for some Oxford University blog called Cherwell. He recently wrote a piece called “A Guide to Dating Posh Girls” aaaand, well, without sounding bitter, it was obvious that he’d ripped us off. And then The Daily Mail — continuing a proud tradition of assuming that the behaviour of Oxbridge students matters more than the behaviour of ones at cheaper universities — got hold of it and made a scene.
Eventually Cherwell. He responded with the bullish confidence of a rich guy, a man who sees suing people as a legitimate response to a little Facebook row. Let it be clear, it really doesn’t bother me that a student ripped us off in what is effectively an online fanzine for boring people, but it’s quite funny that he’s denying it. So, let’s do a quick comparison. It’s not rocket science and for all I know, Beardboy is studying rocket science to come up with the idea. The tricky bit is making the copy good.
Essentially this says that they’ll be polite, but seriously, they don’t want you to date her. Which is what we meant when we said:.

A new dating site, chivalrynotdead. I wanted to make a site which was for all religions and those of no religion. The site was also met with considerable scepticism and derision on the Oxford-based feminist Facebook group Cuntry Living, with a discussion of the site and its aims running to 54 comments. Although the site appears to be unique in the UK, the concept of a website which restricts the ability to make the first move to one gender is not unprecedented in Europe.

A GQ student guide to Oxford University
By Andrew Hough. The guide was published in the “interests of averting mutual befuddlement” and offered advice on a number of topics. But its references to sex, and more particularly the best ways to get women to agree to it, led to the Oxford University student’s article being withdrawn. Its publishers have also been forced to apologise after attracting criticism from those who failed to see the funny side.
Cherwell, the year old student newspaper whose alumni include Rupert Murdoch, Evelyn Waugh and Peter Mandelson, published the six-point guide on the “challenge” of courting classmates from privileged backgrounds. Its author, Tom Beardsworth, 18, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, insisted the article was a well-intended joke, but it was met with accusations of “misogyny” by his peers and University officials.
